How to Change Windows Cursors and Restore Your Pointer Scheme

Use the Windows mouse Pointers dialog to select cursor files, save a scheme and restore defaults. Understand ZIP, CUR, ANI and INF without running installers.

Editorial: DeskSpruce Published

Windows can select individual pointer files in its mouse settings. A cursor set is a collection for roles such as normal selection, text selection and busy. It is not a Rainmeter skin and does not require Rainmeter.

Keep a restore path

Before replacing pointers, note the current scheme. Keep the downloaded files in a stable folder: deleting or moving them later can leave a custom scheme without its files. Do not change a managed work computer without permission.

Select files manually

  1. Download the Windows package linked by its creator. If it is a ZIP archive, extract it first; a ZIP itself is not a cursor.
  2. Open mouse settings and the additional mouse options, then the Pointers tab. The names and route to this dialog can differ across Windows versions.
  3. Select a pointer role under Customize, choose Browse and select the intended cursor file. Repeat for the roles you want to replace, using the creator's role names rather than guessing from the picture.
  4. Use Save As to keep a named scheme, then Apply. You can return to the Pointers tab and choose the previous scheme or restore an individual role with Use Default.

Know the file types

A .cur file is a cursor resource; .ani is an animated cursor resource. A set may mix both. An .inf is setup configuration, not an image and not a cursor file you choose in Browse. Some projects offer INF installation, but this guide does not require running it. Read any configuration before authorizing system changes, and do not run unknown executables to inspect a pointer set.

Check the right package

Linux Xcursor archives and Windows cursor files use different formats. The source must identify the Windows download; the word cursor in a filename does not establish compatibility. Use source-documented sizes and display-scale notes. DeskSpruce has not installed these packages or changed the host pointer settings to test them.

Compare sets

Capitaine documents palette variants and scaling guidance. BreezeX separates Windows size groups from Xcursor sizes. Apple Cursor offers a macOS-style family. Browse the cursor catalog for source-specific notes.
