Rainmeter Portable: Install, Find Paths and Move Your Setup
Use Rainmeter's official portable installer, locate settings and skins, install RMSKIN packages into the correct copy and understand portability limits.
Rainmeter supports an official portable installation: run the installer from Rainmeter's site, select Portable installation and choose a folder you can write to. Program, skins and settings stay in that selected folder. Copying only Rainmeter.exe from a standard installation is not the same setup.
Scope: this is a documentation-based guide to portable file locations and limits. Portable mode does not prove that every third-party skin, plugin or service integration will work on another computer.
Standard and portable installations use different roots
| Item | Standard default | Portable installation |
|---|---|---|
| Program | Program Files\Rainmeter | Selected portable folder |
| Skins | Documents\Rainmeter\Skins | Inside the selected folder |
| Settings and layouts | AppData\Roaming\Rainmeter | Inside the selected folder |
| Start menu and RMSKIN association | Created by standard installation | No registry or Start menu changes |
Use About → Version to see the running copy's actual program, settings and skins paths. This matters when a computer has both an installed copy and a portable folder: opening a package through a Windows association is not proof you are configuring the intended copy.
1. Create the portable copy with the official installer
- Download the installer from Rainmeter's official site, not a repackaged portable archive.
- Choose Portable installation and select the destination folder. Keep it separate from a standard installation you intend to retain.
- Launch Rainmeter from that selected folder and inspect About → Version to confirm its paths.
- Keep the folder structure together when backing up or copying the installation. Do not move only the executable.
The destination must allow Rainmeter to save its settings and skin changes. A disconnected removable drive cannot supply the program at sign-in. A read-only or unavailable location is a file-access problem, not evidence that the portable option is missing.
2. Install skins into the intended portable library
For an RMSKIN package, open SkinInstaller.exe from the portable program folder and browse to the package. The standard double-click association may belong to an installed copy, and portable mode does not create that association itself.
For an archive, extract the actual root configuration into this copy's Skins folder, preserve @Resources and refresh the library. Use the complete RMSKIN and ZIP installation guide rather than copying files into the standard Documents path by habit.
3. Understand paths before moving between computers
Rainmeter exposes built-in variables for the current installation: #PROGRAMPATH# for the executable folder, #SETTINGSPATH# for settings, #SKINSPATH# for skins, #ROOTCONFIGPATH# for a suite's root and #@# for its shared resources. These include a trailing backslash.
Resource references using those variables can follow their owning installation. Hard-coded paths such as another user's Documents directory, an application installed on C: or an old removable-drive letter do not become portable just because Rainmeter does. Review a skin's documented launch targets before assuming its buttons still point to the intended program.
SkinPath is a global setting for the skins library. If you copied settings from a standard installation and the portable copy still shows the old library, inspect that configured path. Do not blindly overwrite it while the wrong copy is running. The actual paths in About are the starting evidence.
Move your own setup without confusing a layout with its files
Back up both copies first. A standard installation stores user data separately, so moving only its program directory omits the skins and roaming settings. Conversely, a layout alone records state and positions, not skin files. Preserve the actual root folders and required plugins using the backup distinction, then review paths in the destination copy.
A new computer can have different monitors, fonts, audio devices, sensor tools and launch targets. Restore visibility through monitor selection and coordinates; do not treat every missing external reading as a portable-install failure.
Startup, updates and removal limitations
Portable installation makes no Start menu entries and does not create the standard startup shortcut. If you deliberately want automatic startup, use one shortcut to the verified portable executable, and update it if the folder moves.
Rainmeter's installation documentation says WinGet's upgrade command is not supported for portable mode. Do not assume a default package-manager command targets your selected portable folder. Use the official portable installation instructions and preserve a backup before updating.
To remove the copy, exit it, preserve any wanted files and remove that verified portable folder. Manually created shortcuts are separate. See program removal versus deleting user data before erasing a folder containing your only customized setup.
