How to Make Rainmeter Start on Startup in Windows

Enable Rainmeter at Windows sign-in, check existing startup entries and add a current-user shortcut without confusing app startup with skin loading.

Editorial: DeskSpruce Published

To make Rainmeter start when you sign in to Windows, first check its existing startup entry. A standard Rainmeter installation can create a Startup shortcut; a portable installation does not. If no entry exists, add a shortcut to the actual Rainmeter application in your own Startup folder, not a shortcut to an individual skin.

Scope: this is a documentation-based guide to Windows sign-in behavior, not an independent test of your computer or every Rainmeter package. Starting the application and making a particular skin visible are separate checks.

1. Check the existing Windows startup entry

Open Settings → Apps → Startup and look for Rainmeter. If it is listed and you want it at sign-in, enable it. Windows also provides startup controls in Task Manager → Startup apps; Windows versions may use a different tab label. Do not change unrelated applications.

Rainmeter's standard installer offers Launch Rainmeter on startup and can create a shortcut for your Windows account. The official portable installation does not create Start menu entries. An absent entry therefore does not, by itself, mean the skin package is broken.

2. If needed, create one shortcut in your Startup folder

  1. Locate the Rainmeter application you actually use. A standard installation normally places it under C:\Program Files\Rainmeter, but a custom or portable installation can be elsewhere. Start that copy manually once and confirm its Manage window opens.
  2. Press Windows + R, enter shell:startup and press Enter. This opens the Startup folder for the current Windows user.
  3. Inspect existing shortcuts before adding one. If a Rainmeter shortcut is already present, check its target and the Windows startup setting instead of adding a duplicate.
  4. Create or copy a shortcut to the verified Rainmeter executable into this folder. Do not move the executable itself, copy the entire skin library, or target a downloaded installer.
  5. At your next normal Windows sign-in, check for the Rainmeter tray icon. On a managed work device, follow the administrator's rules rather than bypassing a disabled startup policy.

Use the current-user folder, not shell:common startup, unless you deliberately administer startup for every user. This procedure does not require registry edits, an elevated scheduled task or disabling Windows security features.

3. Confirm that the intended skins load

If Rainmeter runs but a widget does not appear, open Manage → Skins. Check whether its configuration is loaded, whether its coordinates match the current monitors, and whether a different variant is active. Follow the skin loading and visibility checklist; startup entries cannot repair an off-screen widget or a failed weather service.

Rainmeter stores active and inactive skin state in its settings. A saved layout is useful when you want a named arrangement to restore, but it is not an additional Windows startup mechanism. See layout and skin-file backups before changing configurations. New downloads still need the separate skin installation process.

Undo the change or repair a moved portable copy

Disable the Rainmeter entry in Windows Startup apps, or remove only the shortcut you created in your Startup folder. Do not delete your installed program, skin files or settings to stop automatic startup. If a portable copy moved, update the shortcut target to the new verified path; if its drive is disconnected at sign-in, the old target cannot launch it.

After startup works, browse Rainmeter skins or clock widgets. Choosing another skin is not necessary just to make the application start.
