How to Install Rainmeter Skins: RMSKIN and ZIP Methods
Install an RMSKIN package or extract a ZIP skin, refresh the library and load the right configuration. Based on Rainmeter documentation.
Rainmeter skins use two common installation methods. A .rmskin package opens in Rainmeter's Skin Installer. A ZIP, RAR or 7Z archive usually needs to be extracted into the skins folder. Follow any instructions supplied by the creator before using the general steps below.
Scope: this guide follows the official Rainmeter documentation. The steps have not yet been independently tested by DeskSpruce. It does not certify any third-party package or its weather, music or plugin integrations.
Before you install a skin
If Rainmeter is not installed, get the application from rainmeter.net. The Rainmeter application and an individual skin are different downloads. Check the skin creator's requirements and keep a copy of any existing configuration you want to preserve.
Install a .rmskin package
- Get the package from the source identified on the resource page.
- Double-click the
.rmskinfile. In a standard Rainmeter installation, Windows associates this extension with the Skin Installer. - Review what the installer will add. A package may include skins and a layout; read the creator's instructions before applying the included layout.
- Keep the backup option enabled when replacing existing skins, unless you have a specific reason not to.
- Click Install. If the skin does not load automatically, open Rainmeter's Manage window, find its configuration and select Load.
For a portable Rainmeter installation, open SkinInstaller.exe from the Rainmeter program folder and browse to the package. The standard Windows file association may not be available.
Install a ZIP, RAR or 7Z archive
- Extract the archive and read the included README, if present.
- Find the actual skin folder. Some downloads contain an extra wrapper folder or a folder named
Skins; do not assume that the outermost folder belongs directly in your skins library. - Move the skin's configuration folder to your Rainmeter skins location. The default for a standard installation is
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Rainmeter\Skins. Your configured Documents location or portable setup may differ. - Right-click Rainmeter's notification-area icon and choose Refresh all.
- Open Manage, expand the skin folder, choose a configuration's
.inifile and click Load.
If the skin is not visible
Installing a package and loading a configuration are separate actions. First check whether the skin appears in Manage. If it does not, review the extracted folder structure and refresh Rainmeter. If it does appear, select its .ini configuration and check whether it is loaded.
Do not rename arbitrary archives to .rmskin to force the automatic method. A package that installs can still contain components with additional requirements; check the creator's documentation rather than assuming every widget will work.
Preserve your setup
Save a named layout before applying a package's included layout, and copy customized skin folders separately. Rainmeter layouts store settings and positions, not the skin files themselves. Review any bundled plugins, fonts or add-on executables before proceeding; an RMSKIN extension is not a security certificate.
Next: customize a skin and save a layout, or use the not-showing checklist if loading does not produce a visible widget.
