Windows contrast themes change the system color palette to make text and interface boundaries easier to distinguish. The built-in Windows 11 family includes Aquatic, Desert, Dusk and Night sky. They are available through Accessibility settings, not a Rainmeter installer or a third-party visual-style patch.

## Four built-in choices, one native family

Aquatic uses a dark background with cyan accents; Desert is the light-background choice; Dusk combines a dark gray background with pale accents; Night sky uses a black background with purple and yellow accents. The Microsoft settings preview shows the intended text, selection and control colors. These four presets are grouped here rather than creating near-duplicate pages for each palette.

The supplied screenshot shows the Windows settings choices, not every application on your computer. Applications that use their own fixed colors may respond differently. A high-contrast theme is not the same feature as ordinary dark mode, a color filter or Night light.

[Open Microsoft contrast-theme instructions](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/design/accessibility/high-contrast-themes) — official documentation, not a file download. The Windows 11 presets are built in.

## Before applying: save a restore path

1. Save the current native personalization under Settings → Personalization → Themes and record its name.
2. Record your current contrast-theme choice, including None if contrast is off.
3. If you have custom cursor files or desktop icons, preserve their source files and saved scheme separately.
4. Save open work before making a visual change; settings can take time to apply.

Use [the native theme save and restore workflow](https://deskspruce.com/guides/save-restore-windows-theme/). A theme preset is not a system image or a backup of applications, Rainmeter files or documents.

## Apply and restore through Windows settings

On Windows 11, open Settings → Accessibility → Contrast themes. Choose a preset, inspect the preview, then Apply. Microsoft documents editing individual colors after choosing a theme. Keep the first trial unchanged so you can distinguish the preset from your later edits.

To leave contrast mode, return to the same Contrast themes setting, choose None and Apply. If you also changed ordinary personalization, reselect your saved native theme under Personalization → Themes. Restore your pointer scheme separately if it changed. Do not remove Windows resource files or install a patcher to undo a built-in contrast preset.

Microsoft also documents the Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen shortcut. Prefer the visible settings control when you need to confirm which palette is selected; a shortcut is not a substitute for recording the original setting.

## Compatibility and limits

This entry describes the named Windows 11 built-in choices shown in Microsoft documentation. Windows 10 has its own high-contrast interface and is not promised to show these same preset names. No Windows build was changed or tested by DeskSpruce. This is not a measured readability or accessibility certification for your applications.

Rainmeter skins and cursor artwork are independent layers. Compare [Windows themes, Rainmeter skins and cursor schemes](https://deskspruce.com/guides/windows-themes-vs-rainmeter/) before combining them. Browse [Rainmeter widgets](https://deskspruce.com/skins/) or [pointer families](https://deskspruce.com/cursors/) only if you want to change those layers too. Contrast mode does not make an inaccessible skin or custom-drawn application automatically accessible.
