To move a Rainmeter skin to another monitor, select its loaded configuration in **Manage → Skins**, choose the intended **Display monitor** and adjust Coordinates. To recover an off-screen skin after disconnecting a monitor, select it through Manage instead of trying to find it on the desktop, return it to the primary monitor and use a small visible position.

**Scope:** this guide explains documented monitor selection and coordinates. It is not a test of every docking station, mixed-DPI display arrangement or third-party skin.

## Recover a skin after unplugging a display

1. Open Manage from Rainmeter's notification-area icon. Select the exact loaded `.ini` file, using Active skins if needed.
2. Record its Coordinates and Display monitor before changing them. Save the current layout under a distinct name if you need the original arrangement.
3. Set Display monitor to **Use default: Primary monitor**. Enter a small positive X/Y position, such as 50 and 50, for a normal upper-left-anchored skin.
4. Enable **Keep on screen**, then check whether the skin appears. Once visible, move it to the desired position and enable Save position.

A custom anchor can change which part of the skin the coordinates locate. A very large skin can also exceed a small screen. If the skin remains invisible, check transparency, loaded state and its log with the [general visibility checklist](https://deskspruce.com/guides/rainmeter-skins-not-showing/); monitor coordinates cannot repair a missing image or unloaded configuration.

## Understand monitor-relative and virtual-screen coordinates

Rainmeter normally interprets a skin's position relative to the primary screen. Selecting a numbered display adds an `@N` monitor directive to its saved `WindowX`/`WindowY` settings. For example, `WindowX=200@2` uses monitor 2; that screen selection applies to both axes even when written on only one. These are per-skin window settings in Rainmeter.ini, not meter positions inside the skin file.

`@0` means the virtual screen: the combined desktop rectangle containing all displays. It does not mean the primary monitor. Windows places the primary monitor's origin at 0,0, so a display to its left or above can have negative coordinates. Negative values are therefore not automatically an error when using virtual-screen positioning.

For ordinary placement, use Manage rather than manually editing Rainmeter.ini while Rainmeter is running. A skin's internal meter `X`/`Y` values place text and images inside its window; changing them is not equivalent to moving the whole widget between screens.

## Choose fixed placement or automatic monitor selection

**A fixed Display monitor** is useful when a widget belongs on a particular current screen. **Auto-select based on window position** instead updates the monitor association as the skin moves. Choosing a specific monitor disables that automatic option. Recheck the association after changing your Windows display arrangement instead of assuming a saved number always describes the same physical panel.

**Keep on screen** constrains the window within screen bounds. It does not choose your preferred display, resize the content or recreate a disconnected monitor. **Save position** stores moves; it is separate from saving a named layout.

## Save separate docked and laptop layouts

After arranging connected screens, save a clearly named layout such as Docked. Create a separate Laptop layout while only the laptop panel is available. Loading one restores saved skin state and positions; it does not restore the Windows monitor arrangement or the skin files. See [what a layout actually backs up](https://deskspruce.com/guides/customize-rainmeter-skins/).

A configuration can have only one active variant in its folder. Loading the same variant again does not create an independent second-screen copy. A suite with separate configuration folders can display separate components; do not duplicate an entire suite without understanding its shared settings and resources.

## What this cannot fix

A skin that looks too large on a different display needs its own [size and scale settings](https://deskspruce.com/guides/resize-rainmeter-skins/). A widget covered by applications needs [Position settings](https://deskspruce.com/guides/rainmeter-always-on-top/). Those problems should not be treated as monitor detection failures.
